Meta HQ Mural, California!
Client of a lifetime…Meta! I’m still in a little bit of shock, but tremendously honoured that this enormous platform, with so many incredible artists, asked ME to paint a mural for them at their HQ in California.
In December 2023, I was flown to California for a job of a lifetime. Drawing inspiration from the room’s name, ‘Patrisse Cullors’, I was asked to design a mural celebrating women and progress (yess!). My approach needed to consider an augmented or virtual/mixed reality component within the artwork.
This mural is optimistic and joyful, yet it carries important undertones symbolising women and progress. In the portraits, the women are gazing upwards, proudly acknowledging progress made for their gender, but they are united and determined in the pursuit of true equality. Their dreamlike setting and disposition are symbolic of an aspirational future—a more egalitarian world where balance is realised.
This metallic muse is dreaming of a future where women are equally represented and respected. Unbelievable, still today, 96% of artwork sold at auction is by male artists.
My faceless figures symbolise women universally. They exude power, competence, femininity, and grace. Blending human, digital, and sculptural elements, they bridge classical and futuristic aesthetics, acknowledging where we’ve been and where we’re going.
Actualising the AR component of this mural was also a dream of mine. After six years of experimenting with 3D modelling software, I was finally able to work alongside a team that had the computing power and know how to bring my ideas to life. Because much of my art is designed in 3D space, we were able to easily animate elements of the mural. When you scan a QR code next to the piece, the metallic rings and orbs come to life like this…
As you can imagine, I was treated wonderfully on this job. Meta even sent an overnight team to prep the site for me, masking off doors and protecting the floors, etc. I’m so grateful I didn’t have to tackle this alone. Look at all of that masking!
The offices at Meta are full of art and murals. Many artists I’ve admired over the years have murals there too. It felt incredible to see my work alongside theirs.
Meta has truthfully been the driving force that’s enabled me to build a career and make a living from painting. In the early days, most of my jobs came through the requests folder in my Instagram inbox. Now, those of you who have watched my journey for years are buying paintings and large brands are commissioning my work (thank you!). To the artists and designers that I follow on Instagram, seeing and connecting with your work around the world has kept me so inspired and motivated.
Thank you again, Meta, for this incredible opportunity!
